Message of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to the Participants in the 31st Argentine Industrial Conference

Centro de Convenciones, Buenos Aires, 13 November 2025/ the example of Shaw

“In Argentina, this vision finds a shining and close example in the venerable servant of God Henry Shaw, an entrepreneur who understood that industry was not merely a productive mechanism, nor a means of accumulating capital, but a true community of people called to grow together. His leadership was distinguished by transparency, the ability to listen, and the commitment to ensuring that every worker felt part of a shared project. In him, faith and entrepreneurial management harmoniously combined, demonstrating that Social Doctrine It is not an abstract theory, nor an unattainable utopia, but rather a possible path that transforms the lives of people and institutions by placing Christ at the center of every human activity.

Enrique He promoted fair wages, initiated training programs, cared for workers' health, and supported their families in their most pressing needs. He did not view profitability as an absolute, but as an important aspect of sustaining a humane, just, and supportive enterprise. His writings and decisions clearly convey the inspiration of rerum Novarum, who asked employers "not to keep workers as slaves; [to] respect in them the dignity of the human person, ennobled by the Christian character" (n.16).

The consistency of the servant of God But he did not limit himself to the practice of his profession. He also experienced the misunderstanding and persecution prophesied by Christ for those who work for justice (cf. Mt 5,10). He was imprisoned during a time of political tension and accepted the experience with peace and serenity. He later faced illness, but never stopped working or encouraging his people. He offered his suffering to God as an act of love and, despite the pain, remained close to the workers.

His suffering for the love of justice and for fidelity to the principles of service, progress and human ascension, which he promoted as duties of the business manager in his work... and dominated the Earth, they did Henry Shaw A timely model for all those who shape the world of work. His life shows that one can be an entrepreneur and a saint, that economic efficiency and fidelity to the Gospel are not mutually exclusive, and that charity can penetrate even industrial and financial structures.”
