In view of the 80th anniversary of the martyrdom of Don Francesco Bonifacio, Mario Ravalico's new book sheds light on the silence that for decades surrounded the tragic end of Blessed Francesco Bonifacio (1912-1946), a figure forgotten by history and the collective conscience.
The book traces the life of Don Francesco Bonifacio (Piran, 1912 – Grožnjan, 1946) up to his martyrdom. He experienced all the terrible tragedies of the twentieth century that shook Istria and Venezia Giulia: the war, the armistice, the annexation to the Third Reich, the liberation from Nazi-fascism, and the seizure of power in Istria by the so-called People's Powers, the communists of the new Yugoslavia.
An exemplary priest and pastor, Don Francesco Bonifacio remained among his people always, bearing witness to his clear faith until his cruel "disappearance" on September 11, 1946.
On July 3, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI recognized his as a true martyrdom in odium fidei and on October 4, 2008, Don Francesco Bonifacio was proclaimed blessed.
This book is the fruit of several years of research and, through a meticulous and complete reconstruction, presents for the first time the circumstances of his death and possible burial place.
