In Italy this day was established to preserve and renew «the memory of the tragedy of the Italians and of all the victims of the sinkholes, of the exodus of the Istrians, Fiumans and Italian Dalmatians from their lands during the Second World War and in the immediate after World War II (1943-1945), and the more complex story of the eastern border»*.

The death "in odium fidei" of Blessed Francesco Bonifacio is placed in this historical context, there is no certainty that he was thrown into a foiba; indeed, there are many other hypotheses, perhaps more valid. his remains have never been found.
