John Paul II, from the funeral homily, 7 February 1998

His was a faith learned on the knees of his mother, a woman of solid though simple Christian formation, who knew how to impress the genuine evangelical sense of existence in the hearts of her children. «In the history of my family - the late Cardinal said one day - there is something miraculous. When she had her first child, my mother was just eighteen and she became very ill. Recovered, the doctors told her that she could no longer have children without risking her life. She then went to consult the Auxiliary Bishop of La Plata who told her: "Doctors can make mistakes: put yourself in God's hands and fulfill the duties of her wife". My mother has since given birth to another twenty-one children. I am the last born and she lived to be eighty-two. But the story doesn't end there, because in the following years I was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of La Plata, precisely in place of the one who had blessed my mother. On the day of my episcopal ordination - Cardinal Pironio continues - the Archbishop gave me the pectoral cross of that Bishop as a gift without knowing the story behind it. When I revealed to him that I owed my life to the owner of that cross, he wept." His service to the Church, therefore, gradually took on an increasingly vast and universal dimension: first a diocese in Argentina, then the Latin American continent and subsequently, called to the Roman Curia, the entire Catholic community. Here in Rome he continued with his usual pastoral style, showing a strong love for the consecrated life and for the laity, especially for young people. In his Spiritual Testament he wrote of him: «How I love the men and women religious and all the consecrated laity in the world! How I invoke Mary Most Holy for them! How joyfully I offer my life today so that they are faithful!... I love them intensely, I embrace them and I bless them». And he adds: "I give thanks to God for having been able to consume my poor strength and talents in dedication to dear lay people, whose friendship and testimony have enriched me spiritually".
