On 27 October 2013, five hundred martyrs were beatified in Terragona, providentially during the Year of Faith. Among them the seven martyrs of the diocese of Jaén: Bishop Basulto, some priests, a young seminarian, a young man from Catholic Action, José María Poyatos Ruiz and a religious. They are some witnesses who represent the many martyrs who do not appear in the lists of the blessed, but in the book of life.
MANUEL BASULTO JIMÉNEZ
In 1880 he entered the conciliar seminary of Ávila and was ordained a priest in 1892.
He begins his parish ministry in Narros del Puerto. In the meantime, he continued his studies obtaining a licentiate in theology at the central seminary of San Carlos Borromeo in Salamanca and a licentiate in law at the University of Valladolid. He holds various positions both as a priest and as a professor in various Spanish universities, combining his life of study with an intense pastoral activity: director of the Catholic Workers Club, of the Association of the Apostolate of Prayer and of the Conference of San Vincenzo de ' Paoli, canon in the cathedral of San Isidro in Madrid.
He was appointed bishop of Lugo on January 16, 1910, then bishop of Jaén.
A man of great culture and profound humanity, in his pastoral mission he takes care of the clergy, encourages the catechesis of children and adults, nourishes the trade union associations of the workers' clubs. He gives an important boost to the development of Catholic Action, especially to young people. Bishop Basulto, in the first days of the religious persecution of the second Spanish Republic (1936-1939), was offered the possibility of fleeing, but he preferred to stay. On 2 August 1936 the bishopric was attacked by militiamen and the bishop was arrested. Conducted by train to Vallecas, near Madrid, together with other prisoners, priests and laymen, he is cowardly murdered together with his fellow prisoners.
