Ajmo Petracchi was born in Carmignano (Prato) to a humble family on December 15, 1928, the first of five children. He was ordained a priest in 1951 by Cardinal Elia Dalla Costa. In the early 50s, he served as assistant vicar at San Gervasio, Santa Felicita, and Castelfiorentino. In 1959, he was secretary of the diocesan catechetical office and assistant to the San Michele Youth Community. In 1966, he became secretary of the regional catechetical office, becoming its vice director in 1975. Over the next ten years, he taught Catholic religion in various Florentine schools, including the Ghiberti and Alberti middle schools and the Capponi teacher training college. In 1979, he served as diocesan assistant for Catholic Action, becoming its regional director in 83. From 1982, he served as secretary to Cardinal Giovanni Benelli, and five years later, as spiritual director of the Seminary. In 1986, he served as ecclesiastical assistant to the Giorgio La Pira International Student Center. From 1993 to 1998 he was delegate for the apostolate of the laity and in 1994 he was vicar of Archbishop Silvano Piovanelli, a position he held until June 2001. He was parish priest of San Lorenzo in Arcetri, in the Florentine hills, from 1996, where he passed away on September 5, 2001.
